Beach Road in Singapore

Good day, dear tourists!

This afternoon, I was strolling along Haji Lane at Kampong Glam, browsing through all the amazing indie knick-knacks on display there. At the end of the lane, I found myself at Beach Road.

Oh the sun! The sea! The hunks and babes!

Excited by the thought of spending the rest of the afternoon lying on a hammock with an ice cold cocktail in one hand and a novel in the other, my eyes searched around frantically for signs to The Beach.

Ha! I dream a dream so pretty. Beach Road actually looks like this:

Hey.. wait a minute. IF THERE IS NO BEACH, WHY OH WHY THEN IS THE PLACE NAMED BEACH ROAD??

Well, it turns out that a long long time ago, when Singapore was first founded, that stretch of road was indeed by the sea. As Singapore’s economy grew, land space ran out very quickly, so the Singapore government reclaimed the sea area at beach road and made it into land.

And that’s why Beach Road is called Beach Road, although there’s no beach there.

However, fans of the sun, sand and sea need not be too disappointed, as there are many other pretty beaches elsewhere in Singapore (but of course, right? The country is an island!), the best ones being in Sentosa.
